CPICL Fellows Presented at the 23rd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference 2026 in Indonesia

CPICL Fellows Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh and Dr Wenting Cheng, along with CPICL Research Scholar Darul Mahdi, presented at the 23rd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference 2026. The conference was hosted by the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, in Depok, West Java, Indonesia, on Wednesday 3 June and Thursday 4 June 2026.

Held under the theme 'Empowering Asia’s Rise: Legal Knowledge for Sustainability, Justice and Regional Integration', the conference brought together scholars from across the region to discuss major contemporary legal issues.

Darul Mahdi and Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh presented a paper titled 'The Motive Element in Indonesian and Australian Definitions of Terrorism: Lessons for Security, Rights and Regional Harmonisation.' Their paper examined the inclusion of a motive element in anti-terrorism law in both Indonesia and Australia, and  assessed its implications for both security, fundamental rights, and potential regional harmonisation.

Dr Wenting Cheng presented 'Conceptualising Interoperability of Sustainable Finance Taxonomies: A Three-Dimensional Framework for International Regulatory Alignment.' Her paper explored how sustainable finance taxonomies can be aligned across jurisdictions, proposing a framework based on prescriptiveness, granularity and integration depth to support more effective cross-border regulatory cooperation.

The conference provided an important opportunity to share CPICL research with a regional audience and to contribute to contemporary debates on counter-terrorism law, human rights, sustainability and international regulatory alignment, highlighting the breadth of the Centre’s work through its National and Global Security Program and its International and Comparative Competition Law and Policy Program.
