Thailand International Legal Studies Externship

In 2020, the Law School will offer 12 students the chance to travel to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to participate in a three-week BABSEACLE Externship Clinic. Places are open to law students and students from related disciplines.

You will contribute in many ways including:

  • Supporting the development of access to justice and pro bono initiatives across the Asia region;
  • Access to justice roundtable support;
  • Access to justice organisational network building;
  • Supporting legal research related to access to counsel and legal service providers for vulnerable and marginalised persons and communities. Example thematic areas include: women’s rights, elderly rights, labour and migrant worker rights, rights of drug users, disability rights, and many more.

UQ law students are invited to apply as part of LAWS5233 (Transnational Perspectives in Law).

The three-week clinic will start on Monday 6 July and will finish on Friday 24 July to align with the University mid-semester recess.

The application process is as follows:

  1. Complete the BABSEACLE Application Form. Applications close Sunday 15 March 2020 at 5pm (AEST). Applications and materials must be submitted by email to and
  2. The School of Law and BABSEACLE will shortlist candidates. All applicants will be advised whether or not they have been shortlisted by Wednesday 25 March 2020.
  3. Shortlisted candidates will attend a pre-selection Zoom interview with the BABSEACLE team in the week starting Monday 30 March 2020. Final offers will be made to the successful candidates in that same week.

Accommodation and administrative fees apply and are paid directly to BABSEACLE. The cost per student for the 2020 International Legal Studies Externship Clinic is $1,950 USD, and does not include flights or visas. More information regarding clinic costs can be found in the program flyer.

All interested students are strongly encouraged to apply for an OS-HELP Loan with the support of UQ Global Experiences. The deadline for OS-Help Loans for overseas study commencing March to August is 15 January 2020.  PLEASE NOTE: OS-Help Loan applications can be withdrawn without penalty if the student’s application is unsuccessful, so it is best to apply at the outset.
