UQ partnership with the University of Vienna celebrated

29 Sep 2015

The international research and teaching collaboration between The University of Queensland TC Beirne School of Law and the University of Vienna was recognised with a formal dinner at Customs House on September 27.

The dinner also celebrated the beginning of a new course on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants that brings together 17 law students from the two universities.

Coordinated by Professors Susanne Reindl-Krauskopf and UQ’s Professor Dr Andreas Schloenhardt, this is the second such course, following a similar course held in Vienna in 2014.

Dr Reindl-Krauskopf said the course will provide UQ and University of Vienna students with many unique learning opportunities.

"Students can interact with one another, conduct supervised research work, speak to experts, relevant organisations and other stakeholders in the field and gain research and learning experiences in an international environment," she said.

Professor Schloenhardt said the course was at the forefront of topical issues in law.

"The content is relevant given the volume of irregular migration and the very different reactions and responses to trafficking and smuggling in Austria and Australia," he said.

"Our course invites students to critically reflect on the nature and limitations of international and domestic law on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants.

"We encourage students to explore the criminology of these issues, and understand the logic behind the policies, legislation, and law enforcement measures in this area."

Guests included Dr Helmut Böck, the Austrian Ambassador to Australia, Jeremy Charlston, the Honorary Consul of Austria to Queensland and Professor Monique Skidmore, UQ Deputy Vice Chancellor (International).

In her welcome remarks, Professor Skidmore stressed the significance of staff and students working together in a field of great contemporary relevance and the strong bond between the UQ and the University of Vienna, which celebrated its 650th anniversary this year.

This year, more than 30 UQ law students participated in exchange programs and short courses at the University of Vienna.

The human trafficking and smuggling course will be offered again in Vienna in October 2016.
