Lead ScholarshipFor students dreaming of a career in law, studying at Queensland’s premier law school may be more accessible than they think. The TC Beirne School of Law recognises that many of the best and brightest have overcome significant hurdles, and believes that they should be given the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

The Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (LEAD) Scholarship provides deserving students with financial assistance of $7000 each year for up to five years of their UQ law program. This year, up to 17 scholarships will be awarded. Applicants may also qualify for the School’s Special Admissions Scheme.

Scholarship recipients will have access to internship opportunities, academic mentorship and professional networking opportunities.

Students who have experienced an educational disadvantage – owing to illness, family circumstances, the challenges of a rural education, or other factors – are encouraged to apply.

Overseeing the program within the School are two young academics, Dr Caitlin Goss and Dr Matt Watson. Both expressed their enthusiasm for the scholarship.

“We want to ensure the School is educating a diverse representation of students, not just those from the most selective Brisbane schools,” Dr Watson said.

“This diversity adds to the learning and extracurricular experiences of all students.”

Dr Goss said the recipients selected last year were thriving.

“We have been pleased to see the 2016 LEAD scholars excelling in their studies, and taking part in UQ life,” she said.

“As academic mentors we act as an extra source of advice and support, if any of the scholars should require it.”

If you are considering applying for the LEAD Scholarship, both Dr Goss and Dr Watson stress the importance of believing in your chances.

“Students should apply even if they think they won’t be successful,” Dr Watson said.

“You can’t win unless you apply, and students are often surprised to be chosen as scholarship recipients.”

Applications for the LEAD Scholarship close on 8 September 2017.
