On 13 November, CPICL Fellows Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh and Professor Justine Bell-James served as keynote speakers at the Australia-Indonesia Legal Update Conference. This esteemed event, hosted by the University of Indonesia in collaboration with Monash University and six leading Indonesian law schools, took place at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta.

The Australia-Indonesia Legal Updates Conference is a high-level event focused on current issues in Indonesia and Australian law in regard to legal reforms and matters related to bilateral relations. This activity has the objectives of:

1. Updating participants on the latest relevant legal developments in Indonesia and Australia.
2. Facilitating a platform for legal practitioners, policymakers, and government officials from both countries to exchange knowledge and experiences related to legal matters.
3. Identifying areas where both countries can collaborate on legal matters.

Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh contributed to a panel on penal and criminal law reforms, with a focus on bilateral issues. She offered critical insights into the Australian criminal justice system, drawing comparisons with Indonesia's New Criminal Code and analysing its broader implications for legal frameworks and justice systems in both nations.

Professor Justine Bell-James provided an expert analysis during the panel on climate change and energy transition. She delved into the intricacies of climate change litigation, offering a comparative evaluation of practices and outcomes in Australia and Indonesia, and highlighting key developments in this rapidly evolving field.
