Abstract

States with ethnic, racial, linguistic and religious diversities attempt to design constitutions that try to accomplish two contrasting goals: integrating and accommodating.  They design constitutions incorporating mechanisms that bring their diversities together. They also include mechanisms that allow their diversities to live and celebrate their distinctiveness. Some countries have more integrative mechanisms than others. The thesis investigates why this is so by studying four case studies, namely India, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Switzerland.
