Dr. Patrick C. Shih, Assistant Professor of Informatics in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University Bloomington

The Quantified Self movement has resulted in tracking and visualization technologies that allow people to become more aware of their own activity levels as incentives for living healthier lifestyles. In my research, I leverage the awareness of individual and community activities embedded in sensor technologies, smart devices, social media, and online forums in the design, prototyping, and deployment of novel personal informatics interfaces and civic engagement platforms. In this talk, I will discuss our work in the Societal Computing Lab that extends the possibilities of the Quantified Self movement to those of the Quantified Other in the domains of health informatics, community informatics, and animal-computer interaction.

Dr. Patrick C. Shih is an Assistant Professor of Informatics in the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University Bloomington. He was a Research Associate and Lecturer in the College of Information Sciences and Technology at The Pennsylvania State University from 2012 to 2015. He earned his Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from UC Irvine, where he was a Chancellor's Fellow, his M.S. in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University, and his B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from UCLA. He has also worked at Microsoft Research and IBM Research. He founded and directs the Societal Computing Lab (SoCo Lab). His research focuses on the study of sociotechnical systems and mechanisms to enhance physical and mental wellbeing and to facilitate civic engagement and environmental stewardship.
