Abstract

The presentation will examine the fundamental theological concepts of the Calvianian usury doctrine that form the foundation of his usury doctrine and jurisprudence. It covers the content of the first substantive chapter of the thesis, which examines in detail the concepts of law, equity, charity and liberty, and how these all relate to the usury question as Calvin approached it. Calvin's usury ethic is a natural law ethic, ultimately predicated on charity, of which the moral law is an expression, as well as equity, and liberty the end of the law.
