Free legal English classes
International postgraduate students from a non-English speaking background studying UQ Law coursework programs can access free, part-time English for Academic Communication (EAC) support workshops. The EAC Law course was developed in conjunction with the UQ College and is a 6-week, discipline-specific program for postgraduate students from a non-English speaking background.
The course is delivered by UQ College teachers – specialists in teaching Academic English.
It focuses on developing written and spoken academic communication skills required for successful completion of postgraduate legal studies.
The course aligns to assessment for LAWS7936, but is open to all students.
Although attendance is voluntary, we strongly recommend that students who speak English as a second language take advantage of this valuable resource to ensure they gain the maximum benefit from our law courses.
Sample workshop topics include:
- Academic legal writing
- Research skills
- Summary writing and paraphrasing
- Analysis and critical thinking
- Voice in assignment writing
- Vocabulary for law
- Referencing conventions for law
The Law School pays serious attention to the success of their international students by providing the Fundamentals of the Common Law course. For me, coming from a different legal system country, this course helps me to adjust my academic point of view towards the Australian legal system in the first semester. Plus, the free legal English class is such a positive bonus for me to feel more confident in facing academic life.
