UQ School of Law hosted INSLM Queensland Academic Roundtable on Defining Terrorism

On 23 September 2025, UQ School of Law hosted a Queensland Academic Roundtable to inform the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor’s Defining Terrorism Review. Bringing together experts in criminal law, national security, human rights, and media freedom, the discussion enabled focused dialogue on how the legal definition of ‘terrorist act’ impacts security and rights in the modern threat environment, and explored areas of potential reform.
The INSLM, Jake Blight, was joined by Legal Advisors Roshni Kaila and Anita Coles. Academic contributors included UQ Law School’s Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh and Darul Mahdi (PhD Candidate), as well as Professor Peter Greste (Macquarie University), Professor Susan Harris-Rimmer (Griffith University), Associate Professor Keiran Hardy (Griffith University), and Dr Brendan Walker-Munro (Southern Cross University).
The Roundtable forms part of CPICL’s National and Global Security program, which advances rigorous, policy-relevant scholarship and engagement on contemporary security law and policy.
