CPICL Fellows recognised for their exceptional contributions to citizenship, education and research at the 2025 BEL Awards for Excellence

On 25 November 2025, during the UQ BEL Faculty Board’s end-of-year meeting, the Faculty presented the 2025 BEL Awards for Excellence – a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the exemplary contributions of colleagues from across the Business, Economics and Law Faculty.

As a research centre dedicated to advancing scholarship in public, international and comparative law and supporting HDR candidates, CPICL was especially proud to see several of its Fellows and scholars acknowledged.

The Excellence in Citizenship – Improving Workplace Culture award was presented to the Staff Development Committee, which includes CPICL Fellows Associate Professor Rebecca Ananian-Welsh (Chair), Professor Justine Bell-James and Dr Joseph Lelliott. Their work has helped foster an inclusive, collegial and supportive environment within the Law School and across the Faculty.

CPICL Fellow Dr Joseph Lelliott was also recognised individually with the Excellence in Education – Assessment Design award, reflecting his leadership in developing engaging, research-led assessment that supports students’ learning in criminal law field.

In addition, a Commendation for HDR Research was presented to CPICL research scholar Darul Mahdi for his PhD research examining the legality of military conduct in domestic security operations.

CPICL warmly congratulates Associate Professor Ananian-Welsh, Professor Bell-James, Dr Lelliott and Darul Mahdi on these well-deserved recognitions of their contributions to workplace culture, education and research excellence.
