Researcher biography

Dr Alan Davidson is a Senior Lecturer in the TC Beirne School of Law.

Dr Alan Davidson practiced as a solicitor on a full time basis until 1992 and continues to practice as a consultant. He was a part-time lecturer and tutor in law at the University of Wollongong for a decade before moving to Queensland in 1992. He left the successful New South Wales practice as the highest earning partner, for matrimony. He was engaged as an Assistant Professor at Bond University, lecturer at Queensland University of Technology including acting Head of School, and Associate Dean at James Cook University before commencing at the University of Queensland. He is the Director of the Law School's E-Law Group.

Dr Davidson has a PhD in the field of international banking law, specifically Letters of Credit Transactions. His academic interests include the Internet and the law, electronic commerce law and the law relating to Corporate Meetings. He has written and developed the Law School's courses on Internet Law and the Law of Electronic Commerce at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His qualifications as a computer programmer have aided his joint authorship of The Internet for Lawyers and The Internet for Accountants and the publication of numerous interactive computer based workbooks and teaching manuals. He was joint author of two editions of the monograph Company Meetings with his father (uncredited). His publications have appeared in the Australian Law Journal, the Journal of International Banking and Financial Law, the Journal of Commonwealth Law and Legal Education and the International Trade Law Annual. For six years he has authored over 60 articles for Queensland Law Society Journal, Proctor on CyberLaw.

Dr Davidson is a member of the elite international team reviewing and updating the International Standby Practices (ISP98) and is a member of the Banking Committee of ICC Australia. Dr Davidson is a member of the Queensland Law Society's IT and T Committee and has presented over a dozen seminars to practitioners on Legal Research on the Internet, Electronic Commerce and Information Technology Law. He is an accomplished musician and holder of a pilot's licence with an aerobatic rating.
