Australia Day honours for law alumni

Flags on the Forgan Smith buildingAustralia Day 2019 Honours have been conferred on 16 prominent alumni, staff and friends of The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL), including four from the TC Beirne School of Law.

The annual awards recognise Australian citizens who have achieved excellence and enriched the community across professional, public and service sectors.

BEL Faculty Executive Dean Professor Andrew Griffiths said the 2019 honourees deserved their moment in the spotlight.

“These BEL community members have served their country admirably for many years, making significant contributions to fields as diverse as business innovation research, law, education and mining,” Professor Griffiths said.

“I applaud our 2019 honourees, and I look forward to seeing what they do next.”

Other notable UQ recipients included UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj, who was named a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to higher education and research.

Congratulations to the 2019 honourees from the TC Beirne School of Law:


Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Mr Gary Crooke QC AM, former Integrity Commissioner of Queensland and former Chair of the National Crime Authority | Bachelor of Arts (1964), Bachelor of Laws (1966)

For significant service to the law, to anti-crime and corruption authorities, and to legal standards.

Ms Susan Forrester AM, Chair of National Veterinary Care and former Director of UnitingCare Queensland | Bachelor of Arts (1987), Bachelor of Laws (1990)

For significant service to business through governance and strategic roles, and as an advocate for women.

Mr Thomas McGuire AM, Director and Co-owner of McGuires Hotel Group and President of the Australian Hotels Association Queensland | Bachelor of Laws (1975)

For significant service to the tourism and hospitality industry, and to the community.


Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Ms Helen Matthews OAM, Lecturer and Course Coordinator from 2004-2008 at the TC Beirne School of Law, Principal Lawyer at Women’s Legal Service Victoria

For service to the law.
