About the speakers 

Master of Ceremonies

Kathryn Pacey | Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills

Kathryn leads the Herbert Smith Freehills Brisbane Planning, Environment and Communities team. As part of her role, Kathryn works across resources, energy, utilities, transport and social infrastructure. She has advised on both the government and project side for some of the largest infrastructure projects delivered in the last 20 years.

Fiona Forrest | Employee Relations Manager APAC, Rio Tinto

Fiona is an experienced employment and industrial relations lawyer who has worked in private practice and inhouse roles throughout her career. Holding a Bachelor of Laws and Masters of Law from UQ and postgraduate HR qualifications from RMIT, Fiona was admitted in Queensland in 2004. Fiona’s career has spanned roles in Australia, Singapore and Mongolia. Fiona has worked at Rio Tinto for 9 years, and has held a range of roles in that time. Fiona currently leads a team of employment lawyers in the Rio Tinto Employee Relations team who provide specialist advice and support to Rio Tinto’s business across the APAC region. Fiona is passionate about the role employee relations has in influencing workplace culture, and has been closely involved in the culture transformation at Rio Tinto following the release of Rio Tinto’s Everyday Respect report in 2022.

 

Kate Betts | Partner, Corrs Chambers Westgarth

Kate is a health law and policy specialist with a particular expertise in inquiries, investigations, litigation and dispute resolution. Since graduating from UQ with a Bachelor of Arts (Government)/Bachelor of Laws, Kate has completed a Master of Health and Medical Law at the University of Melbourne and an executive education program in negotiation and leadership at the Harvard Law School. Kate commenced at Corrs in 2014 and has progressed from senior associate to special counsel, to partner in that time. She now leads the Corrs Brisbane Litigation and Health Law and Policy Teams and the Corrs Brisbane Network of Women (Corrs NOW). Kate is currently advising private and public sector clients in a number of high-profile inquiries and investigations and litigated cases including the independent review of Forensic Services Queensland and Metro North HHS ats Stewart which is awaiting judgment of the High Court.

 

Marjorie Daley | Barrister, Gerard Brennan Chambers

Marjorie was called to the Bar in 2021, following more than 10 years’ practice as a senior lawyer at a national law firm in which she worked in its Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane offices. Marjorie also worked for three years in Oxford, England, in a boutique professional indemnity insurance firm. Marjorie has broad experience acting for government and private sector clients and their insurers as well as an extensive general commercial litigation practice. Since coming to the Bar, Marjorie has appeared in all Queensland Courts in the civil jurisdiction. Her commercial practice includes contractual disputes, claims arising from environmental contamination, insolvency matters and negligence claims against professionals (legal professionals, insurance brokers and financial advisors). Marjorie has also developed a practice in succession law, including family provision applications, informal wills and trusteeship matters.
