About The Conversation

UQ Vice-Chancellor Peter Høj is a strong advocate of sharing more of UQ's knowledge through the site. UQ is also a member of The Conversation.

But being published on The Conversation is increasingly competitive, with far more stories pitched than can be accepted by its team of 18 editors nationally. Poorly pitched stories are unlikely to be published.

This presentation with Senior Editor of The Conversation Liz Minchin will show:

  • why public and media engagement matters more than ever for leading research universities like UQ
  • common mistakes people make when pitching to The Conversation
  • success stories involving UQ academics & others who have written for the site
  • practical tips for UQ communications staff to help more UQ researchers get involved with The Conversation.

Launched from Australia five years ago, The Conversation now has editors in the UK, US, Indonesia, South Africa and France. Its readers include Nobel laureates, school students, business leaders, prime ministers & presidents.

Liz Minchin is a Walkley award-winning journalist and author, with two decades of experience in newspapers, radio and online. She is now a Senior Editor at The Conversation, based in Brisbane. Liz’s role includes delivering tailored storytelling & public engagement training around Australia, in a new collaboration with The University of Melbourne’s Centre for the Study of Higher Education.
