In this technological age, it has become almost impossible to "know it all" when it comes to the law. In the ever-changing landscape of evolving law in the twenty-first century, now, more than ever, practising lawyers must be equipped with the skills to understand the principles which underpin the laws they will analyse, apply, and advise upon.

This is particularly so when it comes to the complex world of companies, corporate regulation and corporate governance. Increasingly this area of the law is touching our daily lives, whether it be from the corporate collapse causing huge investor losses, corporate benefits from market manipulation, financial advice scandals or mis-statements to the market, the Australian public and our economy are being impacted by the conduct of our corporations.

It is against this backdrop that we have brought together Lesley Symons and Jennifer Robertson, our two guest speakers, who will provide attendees with:

  • an overview of the key principles upon which our current systems of corporate regulation and corporate governance are based
  • Real life examples of those principles in practice
  • a concluding discussion about current corporate regulation and governance issues.

Please join us for what promises to be an insightful look into Australia's current corporate landscape, and the principles which govern it, chaired by corporate law lecturer, Dr Radha Ivory

The panel will consist of:

  • Lesley Symons GAICD, policy expert and former senior lawyer at ASIC. Lesley is a UQ Law alumna, and undertook study at Harvard University Law School on International Financial Systems. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) in corporate governance, and a sessional lecturer in the QUT School of Law.
  • Jennifer Robertson FAICD, corporate governance consultant at Board Matters. She is the director of several companies and a facilitator for the Australian Institute of Company Directors' (AICD) 'Company Directors Course'. She spent ten years in private legal practice.

The seminar is free for ALPSA members, with pizza and refreshments provided.
