Cult Netflix hit, Making a Murderer has captivated television audiences around the world and has already been hailed as one of the most important documentary series ever made. Dean Strang, one of the most compelling figures from the series will share the successes and challenges of the Steven Avery case and its broader implications – along with the systemic failures of the criminal justice system.
At a time when we are gripped by pressing questions about the fairness and effectiveness of criminal justice systems around the world, concerns that have been highlighted by true crime narratives from Making A Murderer, Serial, and The Jinx to the murder trial of O.J. Simpson – Strang will explore and discuss the US process of justice today and throughout history.
Dean Strang practices in Madison, Wisconsin, as a shareholder in StrangBradley, LLC. He was Wisconsin’s first Federal Defender and has argued in the United States Supreme Court, five federal circuits, and the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Mr. Strang has been an adjunct professor at both the University of Wisconsin Law School and Marquette University Law School, and is a lecturer in legal history for the University of Wisconsin, Division of Continuing Studies. He is the author of several law review articles. His first book is Worse than the Devil: Anarchists, Clarence, and Justice in a time of Terror (U. Wisconsin Press 2013; rev. ed. 2016). His second book, about the mass trial of IWW members in federal court in 1918, will be published in 2018.
