This scholarship provides assistance to a domestic student enrolled or enrolling full-time in either the Master of Laws (LLM) program or a Research Higher Degree (RHD). The Scholarship will take the form of monetary assistance to help with living expenses for 12 months.

The Scholarship is open to Australian citizens and permanent residents. Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

  1. Academic merit
  2. Demonstrated financial need
  3. Demonstrated interest in the study of law
  4. Proposed budget

To be eligible, RHD applicants must be researching in one of the following areas, being areas which were of particular interest to the late Justice Richard Cooper:

  • Maritime law
  • Administrative law
  • Trade practices
  • Native title

An interview may be required during the selection process.


Applications open 1 September 2018. Applications close 22 February 2019.

Students must complete an application form and declaration, and submit it with a copy of their curriculum vitae to by close of business on Friday, 22 February 2019. 

The Committee will meet as soon as practicable after the closing date and applicants will be notified of the outcome in writing.
