The TC Beirne School of Law at The University of Queensland is proud to host the 2014 Law and Society Association of Australia and New Zealand Conference, Public and/or Private Lives at St Leo’s College, College Road, The University of Queensland, St Lucia.

Set within the magnificent grounds of The University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus in Brisbane City, Australia; this three-day conference explores the increased reach of the law in our private lives in parallel with the devolution of many of the State’s public responsibilities, including some prison, health and education services, to the private sector.

What are the consequences of this creep and retraction of law? Can the law ensure individual freedom and safeguard against abuse of power and injustice in both the private and public sphere? Can law create, or allow, new spaces for imagining the self as a productive public being?

Through a series of expert panels, keynote addresses and workshops, participants will examine a number of sub themes with the aim of contributing to scholarship which answers these and other questions pursuant to this highly contemporary topic.

Public and/or Private Lives will begin with the launch of Australian Feminist Judgments: Righting and Re-writing Law, Eds. H Douglas, F Bartlett, T Luker, R Hunter, at the Queen Elizabeth II Supreme and District Court Complex in Brisbane.

Conference registration will open in June 2014. We look forward to welcoming you to The University of Queensland for this notable event.
