Designing and evaluating a novel community justice centre for Queensland

1 Nov 2017

UQ academics A/Prof Tamara Walsh and Dr Robin Fitzgerald will undertake research in conjunction with Logan City Council, the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, and the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General to design and evaluate implementation of a Community Justice Centre.

Traditional court models do not effectively contribute to meeting crime prevention goals in complex communities where those experiencing entrenched disadvantage often end up being repeatedly charged with low-level offences.  By providing a rigorous evidence base for the design of a novel Community Justice Centre in Logan, this research aims to overcome the limitations of mainstream courts by providing therapeutic jurisprudence that addresses the underlying causes of offending behaviour amongst people experiencing disadvantage.
