Herbert Smith Freehills International Negotiation Competition

Herbert Smith Freehills LLP and the National Law University, Delhi jointly organise the HSF-NLU Delhi International Negotiation Competition (INC), which is usually held during the second weekend of September every year in Delhi. INC was conceptualised by HSF and started in 2014 as an invitation-only competition, and within a short span of a few years it has gained the unique distinction of being the first competition of its kind in India (and probably in Asia).

INC aims at providing an opportunity to law students of top universities across the globe to practice and improve their negotiation skills. The competition provides a platform for students to compete in a truly diverse and an international environment. It is carefully structured to simulate legal negotiations particularly for students desirous of becoming international lawyers.

Students participating in the competition assume the roles of international lawyers in negotiating a series of legal problems. The problems are based on real life examples and comprise a common set of facts known to all participants and confidential information known only to the participants representing a particular side. To ensure that the negotiations are more real-life like, the competition is typically judged by transactional lawyers with international exposure.

INC sees participation from top universities from countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, South Africa and India. It has received widespread acclaim for its well-drafted negotiation simulations, quality of judging and overall standards of participation.

The competition will be held from 8-10 September 2017.

Coaching is self-directed with support from Director of Mooting.
