Starting law at UQ can be an overwhelming experience. First years are bombarded with a whole range of new things – from ratio decidendi to eduroam. Our hope with this program, is to make the transition from high school to university as smooth as possible and also to provide older buddies with a platform to work on their mentoring skills.
Buddies are encouraged to meet up for a casual chat every so often and stay in contact by email over any concerns the new student buddy may have with their academic endeavours and university life. Buddies are also invited to various events throughout the year that are held to foster the bond between buddies and relieve the stress of everyday university life.
The new and improved UQLS Buddy Program 2017 looks to provide support to TCB's newest members, by pairing older students with like-minded first years. Older buddies will be able to choose from one of several one-hour basic training session offered in September and will be paired with an incoming first year in early 2017.
We are looking for older buddies across all dual degrees and you can apply no matter what year of your degree you are in. It is a truly rewarding experience and we encourage you all to get involved! If you are keen to take a first year under your wing, please fill out the form on the sign up tab.
Note: This does not affect existing buddy pairings.
For first year students, a buddy is a friendly face that you can approach, particularly in your first days of university when everything can seem quite daunting.
Your buddy is likely to have the answer to that question you’ve been afraid to ask (or even that question you didn’t know you had!). Transitioning to university is different for everyone, but every student shares the common experience of having been new.
Don’t go through it alone!
Buddy assignments for new students will be available in early 2017. If you are a current student looking for a buddy, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
