LAWS5114 Legal Internships – Student Application and Selection Information
Overview
LAWS5114 Legal Internships offers selected students in the LLB(Hons) and LLB(Hons) dual degree programs the opportunity to gain practical legal experience in a professional setting. Through this course, students apply their legal knowledge in real-world contexts, develop professional skills, and reflect on their emerging professional identity.
Because internship opportunities are limited, entry into the course is competitive and by application. This page outlines the eligibility requirements, application process, and selection criteria.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply, you must:
Be enrolled in the LLB(Hons) or an LLB(Hons) dual degree program and have successfully completed all Level 1 and Level 2 LAWS courses, LAWS3700, and LAWS3705;
Be able to commit to the full duration of the placement during the semester (150 hours) and attendance at coursework seminars (3 x 3 hour seminars throughout the semester); and
Meet all professional and conduct expectations of the host organisation and the University.
Quota
Enrolment in LAWS5114 is limited to a maximum of 20 students per semester (minimum 5). Selection is competitive and based primarily on academic merit and professional suitability.
Application Process
Step 1: Pre-registration:
- Any student who is interested in applying for LAWS5114 Legal Internships placements must pre-register their interest. Only students who are pre-registered will be notified of the Call for Applications.
Step 2: Call for Applications
- Applications will open approximately 8–10 weeks before the start of semester.
- Information on available placements, key dates, and the application form will be posted on the Law School website.
Step 3: Submit Your Application
You may select up to TWO preferences from the available placements. To apply, you must submit:
- A current curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting academic achievements, work experience, and relevant extracurricular activities; and
- A statement of interest (maximum 500 words) for each placement preference outlining:
- Why you wish to undertake the internship and how the internship aligns with your academic, professional, and/or personal development goals;
- How you meet the professional expectations of the host organisation (detailed on each placement description); and
- An academic transcript (unofficial copy is fine).
Step 4: Selection and Notification
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. You will be notified of the outcome approximately four weeks after the closing date.
- Upon notification of outcomes, students who have received a conditional offer will be contacted to arrange an interview with their placement host. Interviews should take place as soon as possible after notification.
- Host organisations will be required to confirm selection within seven days of interview, and successful students will be notified.
- Successful students must then confirm their acceptance and sign the UQ placement agreement within seven days.
- Successful students must enrol themselves in the course via mySI-net.
- Unsuccessful applicants may reapply in future semesters.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:
Criterion | What We’re Looking For |
Academic Performance | Strong results across all LAWS courses, indicating readiness for professional work. |
Motivation and Alignment | A clear, thoughtful statement showing genuine interest in the internship and alignment with your professional goals. |
Professionalism and Suitability | Evidence of maturity, responsibility, and ethical awareness suitable to meet the professional expectations of the host organisation (detailed on each placement description) and for representing UQ in a professional environment. |
Communication Skills | Clear and professional written communication in the application materials. |
Equity and Access | Consideration may be given to applicants who have experienced educational disadvantage, are from under-represented groups in the legal profession, or who have not previously participated in an internship or work-integrated learning opportunity. |
Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview with the selection panel if required, and students who receive conditional offers will be interviewed by the placement host organisation for approval prior to final confirmation of offer.
